The Chairman's Corner
GARRY ARANDA
SWAC Fire
Greetings!
I hope everyone has had a safe and Happy Holiday season!
Thanks to the numerous arm twisting from my peers I have graciously
accepted the position of Chairman for the association, it
really wasn’t that bad! As long time association member and one
time secretary I have watched the CFMA grow and excel as one of
the premier associations in the country, we could not have experienced
this growth and success without the leadership and guidance
from an excellent group of past officers.
I look forward to working with everyone in the coming years and
will be looking to the association members for ideas, as Chairman
for the association I hope that I can provide the quality of services
my predecessors have done, and look forward to hearing from you!
.…..Garry Aranda
Vice Chairman's Corner
Gentlemen,
I have to send out a huge THANK YOU to all the members that have made the past eight or so years a
success for the Association. We have been through some changes, and I believe we have come out stronger as
an association, and personally. This has been an educational stint as the chairman of the association, but the
time has come for me to step aside and usher in some new ideas and faces. I will continue within the association
as vice chairman, and I appreciate Garry stepping in to take over the duties of chairman. We have created
a very strong team to get the job done, and I appreciate the opportunity to continue working to meet the educational
needs of our members.
As vice chairman, I will be working with our existing instructors and finding new instructors for
classes we will all need in the future. My biggest concern is getting new instructors that we can count on to
support us and continue to work with the association in the future. We have begun the process with several of
our classes, and I will be pushing to further our ability to expand our curriculum and provide quality training at
our meetings and the academy. I still encourage any members with specific training requests to please contact
any of the officers, we will do everything possible to meet those needs.
This January, we have a meeting in Jacksonville, Florida, of the Fire Mechanics Curriculum Consortium.
This meeting should define the future of that committee, we have some new membership applications
out, and will be putting officers in place that can provide some energy for the work that has to be done to make
the Consortium a workable and successful endeavor. I don’t want to see this go away. I believe we can serve
a very important function in the nation to provide training to any Emergency Service Mechanic, and become a
source for information for other portions of the Emergency Services community.
Again, thank you for your support in the past, and I hope we can count on all of the members in the future
to continue to grow and strengthen this Association in the future.

Improperly Designed Winterfronts Can Cause Fan Failures
Dec 6, 2007 9:59 AM
Did you know that improperly designed winterfronts can cause fan failures? Some vehicle and
engine manufacturers don’t allow the use of winterfronts, and other require specific designs.
The problem occurs when users install older winterfronts with V-shaped openings. These designs
allow air flow through a wedge at the top and/or bottom of the grill and block flow at the
sides. As the fan rotates, each blade alternately passes through areas of high and low air resistance,
which makes the blade flex back and forth rapidly and can result in metal fatigue failures.
Some newer winterfront designs have a single circular opening in the center to allow a more
uniform flow across the blades as they rotate. Consult your apparatus, chassis or engine manufacturer
for information about the use of winterfronts on your vehicles.
