GARRY ARANDA
SWAC Fire

Here's to hoping everyone made through the winter OK. Seems to be the more time passes the busier we all get. Once again it's time to meet but this time we're going to meet in Aspen, CO. We as an association have been pleading to get out fellow members on the Western Slope more involved and it is very ap-preciated that Aspen has stepped up and opened their place for our next meeting. Niehoff will be providing the training and from things in the air the timing couldn't be better. The information will be able to be applied in one way or an-other to all of the equipment we deal with. I say this because of the occasional question that arises of “what benefit is there in going to these meetings?” Again, this is YOUR association and YOU get out what you put in. As an added bonus for those planning to attend the meeting next week, Ken Josselyn of Aspen has lined up accommodations for any member that would like to stay the night before or after the meeting. Anybody wishing to stay can con-tact The Mountain Chalet directly at 970-925-7797, the rate would be $70 a night. To receive this rate please tell the person taking your reservation that you are with The Colorado Fire Mechanics Association. Hope to see everyone next week. Stay safe!

Don’t forget to renew your membership for the 2010 calendar year!
Thanks and I look forward to seeing old friends and members at future meetings!

News From the Academy Coordinator

Happy New Year!
I hope each of you enjoyed the holidays with family and friends. The start of a New Year means the annual Academy is not that far away.
It’s time to start planning, and pick your classes. I hope to see everyone in Greeley this year.
As always, this is your Academy and each of us look forward to your input. I can’t stress enough how important it is for each of you to get involved. Tell us what you like, tell us what you don’t like. Together we can continue to excel!
Training Coordinator
Also, I would like to ask you to think about hosting a meeting and training class. Send us some training suggestions for our meetings.

News from the Secretary

Well spring has come for most of us. I'm sure some in the mountains would argue that. Nevertheless its time to think about your plans to make the Academy in July. Check out the website: co-fma.com for class details.
Yep, everyone is singing the no money tune but then the argument is how much is it going to cost you later when the people responsible for keeping your apparatus running can't perform to their potential due to lack of knowledge? Guess what folks…..school of hard knocks is getting rather expensive! Call me an idiot but one would think we've had far too many cases of lack of maintenance of equipment and the training associated with it. I'm just saying…….. This quarter's CFMA meeting will be in Aspen on April 28th and the training will be presented by Neihoff on the subject of charging systems. I encourage all that can attend to do so because you know we all have an electrical prob-lem we need some help with. I've been told of a couple just within the past week. Plus, it goes without saying I know but with all the electrical gadgets and gizmos we deal with daily, any chance we get to get ahead of them should be taken advantage of.
I'm sure a lot of us have already heard but Ralph Jacques will be retiring from Golden Fire at the end of the month. His expertise will be sorely missed. Hell, personally I wish I knew half of what he's forgotten. Well let me rethink that statement! Just messing with you Ralph…...seriously though on behalf of all of us, we wish nothing but the best!!
There will be festivities @ Golden City Hall on April 30th from 2—4pm. Be sure to stop by

SAFETY ALERT!! IMMEDIATATE ACTION REQUIRED!! If you or any of your employees use and drive 2002 through 2010 FORD Expeditions, Explorers, Rangers, F150, F250, F350 F450, F550 with STEEL rims/wheels PLEASE take them to a Ford Dealership, reputable vehicle repair shop or tire shop and have the tires REMOVED from the wheel and the rims/wheels inspected for cracks as shown in the photos. Take the photos with you to show what you want inspected. I say this because the failure CAN NOT be seen with the tire on the rim/wheel. This does NOT apply to vehicles with aluminum wheels. If you are experiencing any of the following it could be signs that you have a cracked rim, slow or fast air leak, wobble or vibrations while driving. This is a SERIOUS issue and we need to be sure to get those Ford vehicles in our fleet checked out. For the newer vehicles that may be still under warranty it would be best to take them to a Ford dealership to be taken care of that way. The USFS Region 4 is starting to get reports of cracked rims/wheels, just last week the H-T had 4, new Ford trucks inspected and 3 of them had cracked rims. So this is not just an issue with older vehicles. There is no technical bulletin or Ford recall on this issue yet, please have you vehicles inspected and report any findings to me so we can report it. If you personally own a Ford please take the time to have it checked out also, safety awareness and risk assessment doesn't stop when we go home. WUI engine crews, DF’s with WUI engines on their district and districts with Type 6 en-gines must send me the receipt from the dealer or repair shop that inspected the rims. Call me with any questions. Thanks,

Matt
